So WWE said it was too dangerous to bodyslam your colleagues at work, so what could we do to whittle away the week’s frustrations? Well we figured we could SLAM the foosball around the table and that is exactly what we did.

The second annual foosball championship was launched on Friday 15th of April and what a tournament it turned out to be. After much deliberation and squabbling between the regulars and the tournament organiser (me) we finally decided on a structure.
24 Players, 2 man teams, a whole lot of gamesmanship. The competition began with a knockout round, the winners going through to the “Premier” League whilst the losing sides fought it out for the “Plate”. Whilst we had some new inexperienced foosball players the competition was surprisingly fierce in the first to 3 knockout stages. Commendable performances were spotted with the likes of Jane Fraser tearing up the oppositions defences scoring with her goalie with the skills of Siphiwe Shabalala, whilst veterans Jacques Malherbe and Dawid Van Zyl were surprisingly knocked aside by newcomers Alan Robertson and Francois Pretorius, a new formidable pair to watch in the future. In a tough draw last year’s champion, Amy Gardiner, was forced to take a back seat with partner Ray Meiring Being knocked down to the Plate division by Lee Child and Riedoh Salie, but due to some lucky math (and Ray being the boss) got promoted back to the Premier league, and eventually making the final despite calls of FOUL from most supporters!
The Plate final was a tough fight out. The game being extended to 5 points, tensions rose but in the end Jacques Malherbe and Dawid van Zyl broke the back of the game sending Darryn Van der Walt and Craig Bantam tumbling out of the competition. The winners literally won a plate…
The Premier league final was a back and forth game going all the way to 4 all. Eventually the true talent of the champions was shown as Adlie Hendricks and Ebrahim Waja pull of the golden goal to beat out Amy and Ray. Besides the honour of calling themselves the champions the winners won an empty tub of Rama, some old pecan nuts from my desk (promptly returned) and some Top Deck chocolates sponsored by Cadbury’s.
